The Union campsites of Brigadier General Benjamin M. Prentiss's Sixth Division have been overrun by Confederate troops from Major General William J. Hardee's Third Corps. Prentiss's troops had already retreated, reforming in a gap of the growing Union defensive line along a sunken road that extends southeastward from the E edge of Duncan Field. The northern part of this line is occupied by the First and Third Brigades of the Second Division, under Colonel James M. Tuttle and Colonel T. W. Sweeney, while the southeastern end of this line, extending into Sarah Bell's Cotton Field, is now occupied by the First and Third Brigades of the Fourth Division, under Colonel Nelson G. Williams and Brigadier General Jacob G. Lauman. The letter troops took up this position after retreating from the more exposed southern and western edges of Sarah Bell's Cotton Field.

Brigadier General William T. Sherman's Fifth Division starts to give ground before the continuing advance of Major General Braxton Bragg's Second Corps, starting a gradual retreat northeastward across Ben Howell Field and the vicinity of Shiloh Church.

Major General John A. McClernand's First Division continue to hold a line in the area between Woolf Field, Review Field, and eastward toward Duncan Field, and are now joined by Colonel James C. Veatch's Second Brigade, from Brigadier General Stephen A. Hurlbut's Fourth Division.

The Confederate right is now extended by the Second and Third Brigades of the Second Division, Second Corps, those of Brigadier Generals James R. Chalmers and John K. Jackson, respectively, as they attack Colonel David Stuart's isolated Second Brigade, Sherman's Fifth Division, in the area of Larkin Bell's and McCuller's Field.
