- Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, 1849, 1850, 1856, and 1857.
- Presidential Elector on the Republican ticket of Frémont and Dayton, 1856.
- Governor of Connecticut, 1858-1866.
- Resumed his former business pursuits.
- Elected from Connecticut as a Republican to the U. S. Senate, serving from March 4, 1869, until his death February 5, 1875.
- His statue as the "War Governor of Connecticut" adorns the battle flag vestibule of the statehouse in Hartford, Connecticut.
Buried: Yantic Cemetery, Norwich, Connecticut.
