- Studied law, was admitted to the bar, 1840, and commenced law practice at Buckingham Court House.
- Member of the Virginia State House of Delegates 1842-1844.
- Prosecuting Attorney of Appomattox County, Virginia, 1845-1846.
- Elected from Virginia as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and to the six succeeding U. S. Congresses, March 4, 1847 - March 3, 1861.
- Elected a Representative to the Confederate Congress, 1861, being chosen Speaker of that body February 18, 1862.
- Again a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates in 1869, 1870, 1877, and 1878.
- Delegate from Virginia to the Democratic National Conventions in 1868, 1876, and 1880.
Buried: Old Bocock Cemetery (private burying ground), near Wildway, Virginia.
