- Moved with his parents to Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, 1798.
- Studied law, was admitted to the bar, 1817.
- Commenced law practice in Lebanon, Ohio, 1817.
- Prosecuting Attorney of Warren County, Ohio, 1818-1828.
- Member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, 1822-1823, and again in 1829.
- Elected from Ohio as a Whig to the Twenty-second and to the four succeeding U. S. Congresses, serving from March 4, 1831, until his resignation, effective May 30, 1840, having become a candidate for Governor.
- Governor of Ohio, 1840-1842.
- Unsuccessful candidate for re-election, 1842, and declined to be a candidate for the nomination in 1844.
- President of the Ohio Whig Convention, 1844.
- Presidential Elector on the Whig ticket of Clay and Frelinghuysen, 1844.
- Elected from Ohio to the U. S. Senate, serving from March 4, 1845 - July 20, 1850, when he resigned to enter the U. S. Cabinet.
- Appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Fillmore, serving in that capacity from July 23, 1850 - March 7, 1853.
- Elected again from Ohio as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh U. S. Congresses, serving from March 4, 1859 - March 12, 1861, when he again resigned to enter the diplomatic service.
- Appointed by U. S. President Lincoln as Minister to Mexico, serving from March 22, 1861 - September 1, 1864, when he resigned.
- Settled in Washington, D. C., and practiced law until his death in 1865.
