- Captain Partridge's Military Academy, Middletown, Connecticut, graduate.
- Studied law, was admitted to the bar, 1833, and commenced practice in Jackson, Northampton County, North Carolina.
- Member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, 1842 and 1843.
- Presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Pierce and King, 1852.
- Prosecuting Attorney for Northampton County, North Carolina.
- Delegate from North Carolina to the Democratic National Conventions, 1844, 1848, and 1852.
- Governor of North Carolina, 1855-1859.
- Elected from North Carolina as a Democrat to the U. S. Senate, serving from March 4, 1859 - March 6, 1861, when he withdrew.
- Appointed Attorney General of the Confederate States, November 21, 1861, serving two years.
- Resumed the practice of law.
