- Served in the War of 1812.
- Studied law, was admitted to the bar, 1813.
- Practiced law in Woodstock, Vermont, 1813-1833.
- Member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, 1821-1822, 1827, and 1828.
- State's Attorney for Windsor County, Vermont, 1822-1824.
- Judge of the Vermont Superior Court, 1833-1842.
- Elected from Vermont as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, and Thirtieth U. S. Congresses, March 4, 1843 - March 3, 1849.
- Appointed U. S. Postmaster General in the Cabinet of President Taylor, serving from March 7, 1849 - July 20, 1850.
- Again Judge of the Superior Court of Vermont, November 8, 1850 - October 3, 1854.
- Elected from Vermont, 1855, as a Republican to the U. S. Senate.
- Re-elected from Vermont, 1861, serving from March 4, 1855, until his death in 1865.
