- Pursued classical studies.
- Studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Wilmington, Delaware.
- U. S. District Attorney, Delaware, 1838-1843.
- Elected from Delaware as a Democrat to the U. S. Senate, 1851.
- Re-elected in 1857 and 1863, serving from March 4, 1851 - January 29, 1864, when he resigned.
- Resumed the practice of law in Wilmington, Delaware.
- Appointed in 1867 to the U. S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of George Read Riddle.
- Was subsequently elected, serving from April 5, 1867 - March 3, 1869.
- Was not a candidate for re-election.
- Delegate from Delaware to the Democratic National Converition at New York City, 1868.
- Again resumed the practice of law.
