- Brown University graduate in 1833.
- Editor of the Providence Journal in 1838, and afterwards became one of its proprietors.
- Elected Governor of Rhode Island in 1849.
- Reelected Governor of Rhode Island in 1850.
- Declined to be a candidate for renomination, resumed editorial pursuits.
- Elected as a Republican to the U. S. Senate in 1858.
- Reelected to United States Senate in 1864.
- Reelected to U. S. Senate in 1870.
- Reelected to U. S. Senate in 1876.
- Reelected to U. S. Senate in 1882.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate March 23, 1869.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate April 8, 1869.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate May 28, 1870.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate July 1, 1870.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate July 14, 1870.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate repeatedly in 1871.
- Elected President pro tempore of the Senate in 1884, but because of ill health declined to serve.
- Served in U. S. Senate from March 4, 1859, until his death.
