Edmund Strother Dargan
Confederate Congressman
Born: April 15, 1805, near Wadesboro, Montgomery County, North Carolina.
Died: November 22, 1879, Mobile, Alabama.
- Pursued preparatory studies at home.
- Studied law, was admitted to the bar in Wadesboro, Alabama, 1829.
- Moved to Washington, Alabama, where he commenced the practice of law.
- For several years a Justice of the Peace in Washington, Alabama.
- Moved to Montgomery in 1833 and to Mobile in 1841.
- Judge of the Circuit Court, Mobile District, 1841-1842.
- Served in the Alabama State Senate, 1844.
- Mayor of Mobile, Alabama, 1844.
- Elected from Alabama as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth U. S. House of Representatives, March 4, 1845 - March 3, 1847.
- Declined to be a candidate for renomination, 1846.
- Associate Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court, 1847, and in 1849 became Chief Justice.
- Resigned in December 1852, and resumed the practice of law.
- Delegate to the Alabama State Convention, 1861, and voted for the Ordinance of Secession.
- Member of the First Confederate Congress, 1862-1864.
- Resumed the practice of law in Mobile, Alabama.
Buried: Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.
