- Elected from New York as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth U. S. Congress, March 4, 1857 - March 3, 1859.
- Unsuccessful candidate for re-election to the Thirty-sixth U. S. Congress.
- Member of the Peace Conference, 1861.
- Elected to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth U. S. Congresses, serving from March 4, 1861 - October 5, 1863, when he resigned.
- Delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention, 1867.
