Born: November 21, 1810, near Union, Monroe County, Va. (now West Virginia).
Died: July 26, 1876, Washington, D. C.
- Attended the public schools of Virginia and Huntsville, Alabama, and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Yale College, graduate, 1832.
- Studied law in Staunton, West Virginia.
- Was admitted to the Virginia bar and practiced law.
- Whig member of the Virginia House of Delegates , 1841-1842.
- Served in the Virginia State Senate, 1844-1848.
- Delegate from Virginia to the Whig National Convention at Philadelphia, 1848.
- Delegate to the Virginia State Constitutional Conventions, 1850 and 1861.
- Again a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, 1857-1861.
- Elected by the Legislature of Virginia a member of the Confederate States Senate, serving until 1865.
- Elected from West Virginia as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving from March 4, 1875, until his death in 1876.
Buried: Green Hill Cemetery, Union, West Virginia.
