Terminology
This alphabetized listing of 13,076 'Army Events' during the Civil War is a major component of Frederick H. Dyer's massive and unique publication A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, originally published in 1908, based on his analysis of the War Department's 128 volume set War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, originally published between 1881-1901.It does not include Naval actions!
The best available evidence gives a total of 10,455 separate 'Army conflicts' during the Civil War. The 13,076 'Army Events' listed here include: duplicate entries for those events commonly known with more than one name (i.e.: Shiloh and Pittsburg Landing; 1st Manassas and 1st Bull Run; Murfreesboro and Stones River); entries for an entire Campaign as well as separate entries for each 'event' during the Campaign; events at Forts are listed twice, under Fort xxx and xxx Fort; and, in some cases, separate entries for pre or post 'events' related to a larger, primary 'Army event'.
