Operation: Charleston Harbor, SC December 20, 1860 - April 14, 1861 Operation: Fort Humboldt, CA January 16 - May 18, 1861
Appointment: Captain Nathaniel Lyon, 2nd U.S. Infantry, assigned to command of the St. Louis, Missouri, Arsenal, with orders to arm the loyal citizens and execute the laws of the United States

Naval Events:
It was reported by Captain J. M. Brannon, USA, commanding Fort Taylor that "everything is quiet at Key West to this date"--a tribute to the firm policing of the area by Union nava1 vessels. 'Throughout the early months of 1861 the "showing of the flag" by the Fleet maintained a peaceful equilibrium in a situation fraught with tension. Alabama Convention ratifies the Confederate Constitution: yeas 87, neas 6. They also transfered control of forts, arsenals, etc., to the Confederate Government.
