U. S. Postmaster General Joseph Holt is temporarily put in charge of the U. S. War Department, named acting Secretary of War, replacing John B. Floyd who resigned two days earlier.
U. S. President James Buchanan orders the War and Navy departments to send ships with Federal troops and supplies to relieve Fort Sumter.
