Naval Events:

Following the secession of South Carolina (December 20) Major Robert Anderson, USA, removed his loyal garrison from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, on an island in Charleston Harbor; this created special need for sea-borne reinforcements of troops and supplies.

Additional Information:

Southerners inside and outside of South Carolina were outraged by this Federal troop movement. U. S. Secretary of War John B. Floyd opposed the troop transfer. U. S. President James Buchanan was surprised by it, and regretted that it happened.
