South Carolina is the first state to secede from the Union.

President James Buchanan appoints Edwin M. Stanton, a leading member of the Democrat party, to the post of Attorney General, replacing Jeremiah S. Black who just three days earlier had been appointed Secretary of State.

North Carolina receives Commissioners from Alabama and Mississippi by letter - the latter, Secretary of the Interior Jacob Thompson.

William H. Collins, Esq., of Baltimore, Maryland, issues an address to the people of Maryland in favor of the Union.
